How long has it been since you listened to music that actually made you want to run out and buy their entire catalog? Has there been a musician or band out recently that made you think, “Damn! Where the fuck did THAT come from?”
It’s been a long long time for me. So long in fact, that I had to go back to listening to Wagner, Beethoven, and Rachmaninoff to truly get my badass music fix. I’m happy to say that this is no more.
I like all kinds of music from classical, to heavy metal, to EDM (house, dubstep, dance etc.) But after a while, and after noticing that most of the people creating music these days rely more on mixing of music that others have already created, or are more computer created than anything else, I became disenchanted with much of what I was listening to.
Then someone sent me the following song to listen to:
I’m like, WTF is that? Are you SERIOUS???? I didn’t know what it was but for the first time in a very long time I knew I was listening to something amazing. I was told it was just three guys playing brass and drums. Then I’m like, NO WAY! There has to be some digital shit going on in there. There is no way that typical band kid type instruments could make those kinds of sounds. Then I was sent the link to the following “Too Many Zooz” performance at New York’s Union Square.
Hooolleee SHIT! I then had to watch all of their other videos, then had to buy every single one of their releases.
Here is their info:
Forged in the depths of the New York City subway system, Too Many Zooz is unlike anything you’ve ever heard. While only consisting of three members (Matt Doe on trumpet, Leo P. on baritone saxophone, King of Sludge on drums/percussion), Too Many Zooz has the ability of producing a booming sound. This organic music, which they call “Brasshouse,” is the musical culmination of all different styles and upbringings.
While still a young band, Too Many Zooz has received quite a bit of attention. The New York Post calls them “The hottest thing in New York City music”. Questlove (The Legendary Roots Crew) tweeted a video of them, saying, “THIS is how The Roots got their start….minus Youtube to spread the quicker word. Peep NYC’s own”.
While Too Many Zooz grows and continues on their journey, you can still find them from time to time at the largest night club in the world: New York City’s subway system.
Here are a few comments from the above posted Soundcloud song page:
